Paintings on Paper, 2004 - 2005 |
During my 11 years in New York City I worked on expanding my creative vocabulary. Instead of just painting, which was my primary focus before that time, I began to challenge myself with other media such as sculpture, video and photography.
In "Girlyisms", I have attempted to go back to painting while still keeping in mind the varied imagery and symbolism that I have been teaching myself for the last several years.
Each piece in this series should stand alone it it's completeness, not just as one tiny part of a whole idea.
The "Girlyisms" title connotes a lack of masculine power. In these works I am expressing the sincere lack of any male influence, physically, mentally and artistically. They are pretty, stream of conscious, slightly surreal, multifacited, ultimately hormonal.
I have always loaded my drawings and paintings with my own brand of visual vocabulary. The "Girlyisms" paintings are no different. The imagery in these works is based on the circular nature of creation. These ideas come from the basic premise of a dividing cell, and then are allowed to morph into their own separate identities as a result of the process. Many of the images repeat themselves throughout the body of work, and will probably continue to do so in future paintings. When cells divide, the dice are rolled - what will be the result? |
